Marie
Katrina Marie first found out about belly
dancing through the SCA when attending a
yearly event in Arizona called Estrella in
1997. She immediately started taking classes
at the age of 19 and has continued off and
on for the past 10 years. She trained with
her first teacher,
Cathy with Dance of
Arabia (Tucson,
Arizona) in
Tribal and
Cabaret
styles for couple years before moving to
Boston.
Then
a couple years later when returning to
Arizona after having a baby she resumed
classes with Cathy and also tried classes
with Kathy
Ferguson as
well as several various other student
teachers and community belly dance courses.
"It was always fun learning new moves and
communicating with the ladies in class, and
I LOVED dancing so much I would drive 2
hours for an hour class."
In 2003 she moved to
upstate NY and once again started taking
classes this time it was in
ATS
(American Tribal Style in Bennington, VT
with Sahidi
Sisters) which
was much different that the tribal and
cabaret styles previously studied. After a
while she met a couple girls that had been
in the student performing group and they
decided to start rehearsing together and
form their own troupe...which sprang Gypsy
Cabaret!
Continuing her education Katrina decided to
try Gypsy
style dance and took a course and workshops
with Suzanne
Rancourt (at
Lorraine Michael's School of Dance in
Albany, NY) and shortly after started
dancing with Rumpus and the Wild Things.
Since then she has attended various belly
dance shows, performances and workshops (focusing on
Indian
dance moves and
African
styles) including a weekend
with John
Compton from
Hahbi 'Ru as well as
Kami Liddle, Zoe Drakes
and
Sonia
from the Belly Dance Super Stars.
Currently she is traveling to shows and
workshops in NY, NJ, MA, VT and CT to sell
Katrina Marie Dancewear and take as many
workshops as possible. She also performs
locally in Albany, Saratoga and Cambridge,
NY as Gypsy
Cabaret with
several girls. And she is now offering
beginning and intermediate belly dance
classes in her studio located in Hoosick
Falls, NY.
